IOI Training Course on Ocean Governance: Policies, Technologies and Practices
May 27 to June 7, 2024 Tianjin, China
(hosted by the National Marine Data and Information Service, Ministry of Natural Resources of the People’s Republic of China)
The training course aims to provide basic knowledge and practice of ocean governance with special reference to the international legal framework for ocean governance set up by the UNCLOS, and to the policies, technologies, methodology and good practices of ocean governance for both coastal zones and the marine areas beyond the national jurisdiction. The programme shall address the new challenges of ocean governance to: deepen understanding of the complexity and role of ocean related issues in sustainable development; deepen understanding of the importance of the ocean and ocean resources in social-economic development of the WESTPAC region; strengthen and update academic knowledge, while sharing practical lessons drawn from actual experience in integrated coastal and ocean management.
Applications from eligible applicants from the WESTPAC region are being received till the deadline of the 5th April 2024. Bursaries for the course costs and local accommodation in Tianjin are available; however all successful applicants must cover their return travel costs to China.
Eligible applicants - the programme shall be offered in English
(1) Government employees who have been engaged in ocean and coastal management, marine planning, marine science and technology research or have been working at ocean affair management departments at various levels of governments for more than 2 years, and have a bachelor degree or higher.
(2) Professionals who have been engaged in ocean education, marine scientific and technological research at universities or research institutes for more than 2 years, and have a bachelor degree or higher.
(3) Language requirement: good command of English

2023 Training Programme
The training course was launched on the 11th September under the aegis of high level guests - Ms Liu Xiaoyan, Counsellor from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ms Yu Xinwei, Deputy Director of the Department of the Ministry of the Natural Resources, and Dr Shi Suixiang, Director-General of the National Marine Data and Information Service, and Governor of the IOI Governing Board.
36 participants from 12 countries (Bangladesh, Cambodia, Cameroon, China, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, Myanmar, Philippines, Sri Lanka and Thailand) participated in the training course, of whom 22 participants participated in the training course in-person in Tianjin, the rest online. The training course was conducted through intensive presentation classes and discussions in or after classes. Read more....
2022 Training Programme
The two-week training programme, focusing on issues of the Western Pacific Ocean, was held in hybrid format and attracted 26 participants from eight countries, including China. Participants from Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Singapore and Thailand followed the course lectures online, joined by their Chinese colleagues attending in person in Tianjin, PR China.
